SMARTPHONE: Keyboard Shortcuts & Personal Dictionaries

Did you know you can add shortcuts to your mobile device? For example, typing "@@" can insert your email address, or "voa" can insert "http://www.fb.org."

The general idea is that you can add words to your dictionary so that they don't get auto-corrected. But you can also add shortcuts, so that "brb" is, in effect, auto-corrected to "be right back." Obviously, this isn't that useful for abbreviations that everyone already knows. But it is helpful for longer strings that you type often, and don't want to abbreviate.

Disclaimer: These shortcuts may not work in every app on your phone. How the app accepts input from your input method will vary from app to app.

iOS

In iOS you can access your keyboard shortcuts by going to Settings > General > Keyboard and then add a new shortcut.

Android

In Android, the location of the setting may vary with model and input method. You can start by going to Settings > Language and input. From there, you might see an option for Personal dictionary. Or if you have a Keyboards and Input Methods section, there should be a Gear icon next to each input method, which would then have the Personal dictionary option.
