Utilities : List Settings : New Subscriber Policy

Following are some of the more important settings you can set for your list. You must be a list admin to change these settings. If you are not able to get to these settings, please see HelpDesk for assistance.

Not all settings are described below, only the ones which we typically use and of which you should be aware. If you have questions about other settings, please contact HelpDesk.

Security

Security: closed - only an administrator can add new members

Security allows you to determine how people are added to your list. Following is a list of each option. There is no default for this.

  • open - anyone can join (no approval needed)

This is useful for public, voluntary lists in which we want to include as many people as possible, and to which no sensitive or internal messages are sent; all content should be considered public. Anyone with an email address can send a request to the list and be added automatically.

  • private - administrator must approve new members

This is useful for private, voluntary lists. Anyone can request to be added. But an administrator must approve the request. This is useful for general information lists which we want to grow, but which we still need to control who gets it in the case that sensitive or internal message are sent.

  • closed - only an administrator can add new people

This is useful for private, involuntary lists. No one can request to be added. This is is the default for iMIS committees which are being synced to ListManager, and other lists based on a role the members fulfill, such as state coordinators.

  • password - new members need to know the password to join

This option is not useful. This would allow anyone with the password to join without our knowledge. It also requires us to know these passwords for each list. This option should not be used.
